I use boat hooks a lot to retrieve mooring lines. The usual problem with them is salt water corrodes the telescoping poles which then freeze either in the open or closed position. This model didn’t last long enough for that to happen because on the second day of use the plastic hook pulled off the end, disappeared into the harbor and left me with a glorified mop handle. Yes, the hook was fully screwed onto the end. But the plastic hook is not rigid but semi-flexible, meaning that a good tug on a rope line can unseat the hook and pull it over the screw end of the pole. Very disappointing design.
Good Boat Hook for money
This is a fine unit for the cost. Stows easily on a fishing pole rack and does all that is asked from a boat hook.
In this day and age when most products are deceptively marketed, it’s so nice to come across one that is exactly as presented and built to last as well. Pole telescopes out easily to any length you want and locks securely via a quick wrist twist, and then reverses just as easily for storage when not needed. I found that it works perfectly for pushing and pulling items in the rear of my canopied pickup truck bed. You can even extend it sideways in the truck bed to make a temporary blockade and keep things from shifting around. Excellent product!
Telescoping Boat Hook
This hook works great not only for grabbing the dock cleats but for grabbing items that have fallen overboard. We lost a floatie toy and were able to retrive it with the hook. THis also works great in tight areas while docking to avoid slipping or falling while docking.
This will be fine for moving and hooking 1/2 ” ropes, but don’t plan on anything heavier than that. I envisioned being able to grab a bouy or a dock beam and using it to position a small skiff but don’t think they will handle that.
sturdy, lock holds firmly, hook end is removable/replacable,( unscrews). good to have to push and pull, or even retieve something that was dropped overboard. well made. good deal.
Broke in the first two weeks
We used this hook a total of about 10 times before it broke. When we hooked the cleat the hook part just came right off. I was surprised the plastic was that weak. Also the hook was too small for some of the bigger cleats we come up to when docking on the river.
Makes life so much easier!
We use this every time we go boating! My husband and I just bought our first boat, so we’re really new to docking and pretty much everything with a boat! This pole makes it a million times easier to get the rope on the hook at the dock, both when we are bringing the boat in the water, and when we are pulling the boat up to get ready to leave! Makes my life so much better!
Broke in first use
I order 2 of these and both of them broke. One the cheap plastic at the end broke and the other the rubber handle slipped off and into the water. The pole extends okay but can’t do much with it other than push off now.
